Jaap Rog, Chairman of the Management Board, on Sustainable Enterprise

Investing in the environment and society

The constant pressure for economic growth is leaving deeper troughs in its wake. Prices are on the rise. Our ecosystem is diminishing, the climate is changing, every square meter is overdeveloped, and raw materials and energy are growing scarce. It is high time to find the right balance between people, profit, and the planet. Corporate Social Responsibility contributes to both improving society and enriching enterprise.

In pursuing these primary goals, we must take into account not only finances, but also our impact on social and ecological environments. KPMG Meijburg & Co aims to make a long-lasting contribution to sustainable enterprise, and we have formed our CSR policy based on three pillars: implementing CSR within our business process, investing in society, and investing in the environment.

Investing in Society
Meijburg is making long-term investments in society. Because knowledge is one of the key elements of our policy, we emphasize the importance of sound education through corporate sponsorship. As a knowledge organization, we are proud to do our part to improve education worldwide and make it more accessible. That is why we sponsor programs such as Unicef’s Girls’ Education Project in Yemen.

Our mission is to set up a unique, socially-conscious corporate project with an educational institution as the central focus.

Corporate Social Responsibility is also high on our agenda in our recruiting campaigns. We have therefore started a project for students that will continue through this academic year on New Ventures involving tax. During this project, tax students have the chance to use their tax know-how to make a meaningful contribution towards a better society.

Investing in the Environment
We strive to reduce the carbon footprint our activities leave behind. We have implemented a number of policies, including purchasing Groene Stroom (Green Power), establishing sustainable offices in Rotterdam and Amstelveen, introducing phone and video conferences, as well as using more environmentally friendly means of transport. This means that we are offsetting all output related to accommodation (energy and global warming) and transportation (kilometers driven or flown). Our goal for 2010 is to reduce CO2 emissions by 25%.
